AVC 2026: Japan and Iran remain unbeaten, Chinese Taipei claim first pool win

The 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship pool stage in Fukuoka has so far followed a clear order. Japan, playing at home, and Iran both remain undefeated and have not dropped a set. Chinese Taipei have secured their first win of the tournament, while India still need other results to go their way in the race for a quarterfinal spot. The tournament is not just another Asian championship. It serves as a direct qualification path for the 2028 Olympics and the 2027 World Cup. That explains why the strongest teams are eager to finish first in their pools and earn a more favorable knockout-stage draw. Japan have relied on Yuji Nishida and Ran Takahashi. Nishida scored 16 points and converted attacks at 82% in the match against Australia. Takahashi added 13 points and five aces against Bahrain. Those are impressive numbers, but they should be read against the level of opposition in the pool stage. Iran have also looked solid. Opposite hitter Poriya Khanzadeh scored 20 points, while two outside hitters added 11 points each. That balance makes Iran harder to defend than teams depending on one attacker. Chinese Taipei's first win was anchored by captain Chang Yu-Sheng, who recorded six blocks. India's captain Vinith Charles scored 19 points, including kill blocks, but India's fate may be decided by the Oman-Bahrain match. The biggest risk in the pool stage is false certainty. High attacking percentages and aces against weaker sides do not guarantee success in the knockout rounds. Japan and Iran are still the teams to beat, but the real test will come when they face strong blocks and tight matches in five sets. As the pool stage closes, tactical details, serving pressure and bench depth will matter more. Volleyball at this level rewards teams that understand space and rhythm, not those who simply rely on individual brilliance.
